Youth Programs at Bethany

Our Youth Group opportunities are made available to youth on Bainbridge Island and the surrounding communities. You do not need to be a member of Bethany to participate, although the goal of some events is to build community so some attendance expectations may apply. You will see that we have a variety of opportunities. Some opportunities are geared towards building a community and learning about God. Service event opportunities allow youth to practice walking a path that cares for other sisters and brothers, and not just themselves. Still other opportunities might resonate with a youth’s passion for music and drama. There are many ways in which we can connect with God and begin to see what God’s dreams might be for us! Take a look at our Calendar of Youth Activities and the program descriptions below.

High School Youth Group: Grades 9-12

We welcome our 9th-12th graders this year to join us for High School Youth Group! We gather as a community to learn and experience God through fun and service. Our regular gathering times will be on Sundays, following morning worship, 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (or 3:00 p.m. on first and third Sundays), including lunch together:

  • First Sundays each month: Special outings. Expect to go to movies, bowling, climbing, over to Seattle for lunch, etc. You'll help plan it!
  • Third Sundays: Service project. Each month, plan on serving in some way, like helping paint an elderly person's home, clearing trails, working at Helpline House, etc.
  • Second and Fourth Sundays, plan on a mixture of board games, devotions, Bible studies, scavenger hunts, movies and discussions, etc., right here on our Bethany campus and in our own yurt.

Serving and being with those in need is an important way in which Bethany youth live out our faith. So, each month there will also be opportunities to go serve meals to our Compass Center residents in Seattle. Throughout the year, also plan on longer special retreat and service opportunities at Holden Village (Chelan), Lutherwood (Bellingham), Mexico (Tecate), and more--help design it! There are lots to look forward to this year. Join us!

Confirmation: Grades 7-8

On Wednesday evenings, we gather our 7th and 8th grade youth! Confirmation is not just an extension of Sunday School. It is a time in a person's faith life to "confirm" whether they can really say that they believe the things they've been taught or not. It is a great time to ask questions about things you have trouble believing or things that you just don't understand. However, our gatherings are not just about going to class. We welcome you to join us at 6 p.m. for dinner and fellowship. Following that will be a short time for games and fun before having some class time and ending at 8 p.m. During the year, we will also have a chance to have retreats, do service events together, and participate more fully into the life of the congregation. So, your Confirmation journey is not just about learning. It is also a chance to build as a community of faith together while having fun. The finale each year is a Confirmation retreat at Lutherwood, certainly something to look forward to in the summer. Join us!

Bethany Believers: Grades 5-6

Our 5th and 6th graders this year will enjoy our Bethany Believers youth group. We typically gather on your half days. So, come on over to the church for a bite of lunch on us, some devos, and some fun. Sometimes we'll do it all right at the church. Other times we may head out to Silverdale for some fun like mini-golf or bowling. Keep an eye out for what is scheduled, how long it will take, and what to bring. We also continue serving at the Compass Center each month and will add other gatherings throughout the months. Join us and invite a friend!

Music and Drama: All ages through high school

We have multiple  programs for youth in music and drama throughout the year, with flexible schedules so that families can pick and choose how their children will participate. Our goal is to have fun while learning more about music, drama and God.

  • Faith for Kids in Story and Song
Each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., from October 1 through November 19, students in first through fifth grade can act out the Bible readings for this fall through skits and songs. They will learn the basics of good singing through vocal warmups, breathing exercises and good choral technique. The basics of acting will be taught through theatre games and exercises that build confidence as a performer. And best of all, what a great way to learn about and share the stories in the Bible!
  • Christmas Program
Youth will tell the Nativity Story in story and song at the 5 p.m. service on Christmas Eve. There will be three rehearsals on Sundays; December 7, 14, and 21.
  • March Children's Musical
Once again, we will be putting on a show featuring the talented youth of Bethany and the Bainbridge community. Rehearsals will be held in February and March on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. A more complete schedule and the name of the musical will follow soon!
  • Girl's Choir
The Occasional Girls Singers (for lack of a better title at this point) will meet one Sunday a month and sing occasionally. This is for girls in 5th-12th grades who have had some singing experience. We will do some great music and work on good vocal technique.
